Decommissioned Govan Berth Cranes:
November 2013 saw plans announced to dismantle the remaining redundant Govan Berth cranes at the shipyard on the southern banks of the River Clyde. These photographs were taken in 2011/12 and show the five 80 tonne cranes and the two 35 tonne cranes which were installed in 1974, some 39 years ago. BAE shipyards stated that the removal of the cranes was due to the fact they were obsolete, having been decommissioned in 2008, and having been replaced by more modern mobile cranes since.
The cranes are to be dismantled by the Coatbridge demolition company Reigart over an 18 week period. The last crane removed from the site was the Titan crane, dismantled in 2007. The Titan crane's removal left just four Titans remaining on the Clyde, all currently A-listed and in various states of repair, although all decommissioned.
